Plot[]
The day starts out with Ye-Ye reading Kai-Lan and her animal friends the story of the Monkey King, a Chinese hero which Hoho really likes. Ye-Ye reads the story called "The Monkey King and the Baby Rabbit", where the Monkey King rescues a baby rabbit trapped on a branch and returns him to his mother. After the story is over, Ye-Ye leaves to go water his flowers. While he’s gone, Kai-Lan gets an idea of having her and her friends put on a play based on the story Ye-Ye read, where they would act it out. Upon hearing this idea, everyone gets excited, especially Hoho.
They go to the stage, where the ants are preparing the sets and decorations for them. Kai-Lan states the first thing to do is decide who will play which role. Tolee gets the role of the butterfly and Kai-Lan chooses to play as the momma rabbit. When figuring out who should be the Monkey King, Hoho is eager to take the role, but Rintoo steps in before he gets a chance to speak. Rintoo is then given the part of the Monkey King and Kai-Lan gives Hoho the role of the baby rabbit, which makes Hoho upset. Next, Kai-Lan gets out the costumes for everyone. While watching Kai-Lan and the others get in their costumes, Hoho gets enraged about not getting the role of the Monkey King. Kai-Lan then brings Hoho his costume, but Hoho just sits down on the ground.
Kai-Lan then tells everyone it’s time to practice the play. While they rehearse, Hoho is still unhappy about his role. Just then, the ants bring over the magic stick to Rintoo, which makes Hoho even more upset. Hoho gets really jealous and angry about not being the Monkey King, nor getting the magic stick. He takes off his baby rabbit costume and announces that he quit the play, which shocks everyone.
The others try to figure out why Hoho quit. Seeing that he was furiously stomping his feet and making fists with his hands, Kai-Lan comes to the conclusion that Hoho must have quit the play because he's mad. Rintoo explains that they can't do the play without Hoho, so they all have to find a way to help him so he doesn't feel mad anymore.
Suddenly, the curtains start opening and closing, but they are not sure why. They go over to a painted bush, where they come across the ants testing out the curtains. San-San asks which one of them wants to open the curtain when the play starts. One of the ants, Fufu, wants to do it, but gets mad when San-San gives the job to Bubu instead. Kai-Lan and her friends get worried when they see Fufu mad, but she then calms down by taking deep breaths. Afterwards, she goes over to Bubu and tells him she was upset because she wanted to open the curtain. Bubu states that he had no idea and was glad about Fufu explained what was making her mad, which made her feel better too. So to compromise, they decide to open the curtains together. Kai-Lan then finds a solution; "when you feel mad; say what's making you mad and you'll feel better."
The others approach Hoho and find that he’s still mad. Kai-Lan tells Hoho that in order to help him, he needs to calm down first by taking deep breaths, which he does. Once he’s calm, Kai-Lan then advises Hoho to say what is making him mad. Following Kai-Lan's advice, Hoho states that he was mad about not getting the role of the Monkey King in the play. Everyone gasps since they did not know. Hoho explains that he did not get a chance to tell them that. Afterwards, Hoho feels better and decides to be back in the play. Rintoo then decides that since Hoho really wants to be the Monkey King, he’ll trade roles with Hoho, which makes him even happier.
With everything settled, the kids call for Ye-Ye, who arrives just in time for the play. The play begins with Hoho, as Monkey King, playing with the Butterfly (Tolee), until Rintoo, as the baby rabbit, cries in a basket on a branch. Hoho then jumps really high to get Rintoo down, where Kai-Lan, as the momma rabbit states to the Hoho "you’re my hero", which makes him feel very proud. The ants then close the curtain and the audience applauds.
After the show, Ye-Ye congratulates the kids on their performance, and everyone tells Hoho how great he was as the Monkey King, and Hoho feels very proud and happy. Hoho, Rintoo, and Tolee then head off to go play as Kai-Lan waves goodbye.
