Kai-Lan's Big Surprise is the 6th episode of the 2nd season of Ni Hao, Kai-Lan, and the show's 24th overall episode. In this episode, Kai-Lan and her friends put together a thank you party for Ye-Ye, but a gust of wind ruins everything.
Summary[]
Kai-Lan wants to throw a very special thank-you party for Ye-Ye to thank him for all of the cool things he has ever done, but things take a turn for the worse when a huge gust of wind ruins everything her and the gang have set up, leaving Kai-Lan down in the dumps. Kai-Lan then started crying and now it is up to Rintoo, Tolee, Hoho and the viewers to make her as happy again and help her fix the party before Ye-Ye gets back from apple picking.
Plot[]
The episode starts with Kai-Lan greeting the viewers and saying that she's so glad they're here. Ye-Ye shows up and says that he's glad too. Ye-Ye then starts showing Kai-Lan how to write "love" in Chinese, which she uses to describe her love for things like flowers, ladybugs, and even Ye-Ye himself.
Ye-Ye then offers to pick apples for Kai-Lan and her friends. Being grateful for Ye-Ye’s loving nature, this gives Kai-Lan the idea to have a thank-you party for him. She tells her friends Rintoo, Tolee, and Hoho about the idea, and they help her with making the decorations. They discover that Ye-Ye’s favorite color is red, so they use it.
When Hoho wants to paint an apple for Ye-Ye, he is sad when he finds out they ran out of red paint. Kai-Lan, Rintoo, and Tolee give him a hug, but that doesn't immediately lift his spirits, so they show us what makes them happy. For Kai-Lan, it’s making silly faces, for Rintoo, it's roaring, and for Tolee, it's dancing. Finally, jumping makes Hoho feel happy, and when he tries it, he feels better, and decides to paint a green apple instead.
While the others continue working on the decorations, Kai-Lan goes to Mr. Fluffy's bakery to get a cake, and since Ye-Ye really likes pineapples, she chooses a pineapple cake. Next, she stops by her house to make a card using art supplies from her heart box. She glues a picture of her and Ye-Ye onto a red card and writes "love" on it.
Kai-Lan goes back to the party, which is now beautifully decorated. She is about to help Tolee put up the remaining decorations, when suddenly, it starts to get pretty windy. To make matters way worse, a big gust of wind blows the decorations away and tears them, causing Rintoo, Tolee, and Hoho to run after them. Unfortunately, the card rips in half and the cake falls to the ground. With the thank-you party now in ruins, Kai-Lan begins to cry.
Rintoo, Tolee, and Hoho return with the stuff and hear Kai-Lan sobbing. Pondering why she's sad, the trio and the viewers recall that it got windy and everything for the party got messed up, helping them realize the true motive for Kai-Lan's sadness. The three then ask her if she's sad about Ye-Ye's thank-you party being messed up, and she confirms it. Not wanting her to be sad, the friends decide to give her a hug, but it doesn’t immediately lift her spirits. The trio then decide to help their friend feel better. Rintoo then asks the viewers if they too will help Kai-Lan feel better. Assuming they said yes, the trio and viewers start brainstorming ways to make her feel better. They recall doing what made them happy, inspiring them to help Kai-Lan the same way. After a brief time of thinking, they recall that making silly faces is what makes Kai-Lan feel happy, so when they do, Kai-Lan immediately feels better.
Now inspired, Kai-Lan comes to the conclusion that they need to fix the thank-you party, but Ye-Ye is almost done picking apples. When they see Ye-Ye making a heart out of the apples, they decide to use the messed up decorations to make a heart. Mr. Fluffy comes by with fresh pineapples after hearing about what happened to the cake.
Ye-Ye sees the party Kai-Lan and her friends came up with, and Kai-Lan tells him that they wanted to thank him for everything that he does for them. Ye-Ye loves it and Hoho plays his turntables for the party. Ye-Ye and Kai-Lan eat pineapples together, talking about how Kai-Lan put together a wonderful party. The episode ends with everyone continuing to party.

Trivia[]
- This is the only episode where Kai-Lan cries.
- The scene where Ye-Ye asks Kai-Lan if she wants apples for her and her friends and where Kai-Lan asks the viewers if Ye-Ye would like a surprise party was used in the Nick Jr. we are thankful segment from 2009-2011.
- The scene where Kai-Lan cries after Ye-Ye's party gets ruined has became an internet meme.
- This is the first episode where Kai-Lan sings "I Got It" instead of "We Got It" since "Rain or Shine", where "We Gotta Gotta Try to Find the Reason Why" was sung twice.
- This is the first of two episodes where "What Can We Try (It's Up to Me and You)" is sung after "We Got It", with the second being "The Place Where We All Live", as well as being the first and only episode where that song is sung twice instead of once. The first time singing, it was Tolee, Hoho, and Rintoo trying to cheer up Kai-Lan, and on the second time where Kai-Lan sings, it's about fixing the thank-you party.
- This is the third episode where the main problem isn't caused by anyone, but rather nature or gravity, following "Rain or Shine" and "The Moon Festival".
- Excluding "Wait, Hoho, Wait!", where the title reveals the main problem, this is the first episode where the main problem is foreshadowed, as the gust of wind on the title card sequence foreshadows the thank-you party getting messed up.
- This is the only episode where the three sub-characters (Kai-Lan's animal friends) help the main character (Kai-Lan).
- This is the last episode to be under the Noggin licensing and to air on the Noggin channel. As the Noggin channel later became defunct in 2009, the show’s future episodes later started airing on the Nick Jr block and later The Nick Jr Channel.
- Judging by the picture of Lulu and her sky castle, this is the first appearance of Lulu's home, with its only main appearance being in Lulu's Cloud.
- The cakes featured in Mr. Fluffy's bakery are chocolate, pineapple, and strawberry.
- This episode was originally titled "Things Fall Apart".[1]
Remarks[]
- It's not necessarily possible for wind to rip paper apart, so the card shouldn't have been ruined. Also for that matter, the pineapple cake shouldn't have blown off the table either. Realistically, given how much the cake would've weighed, it would've required much higher winds than normal.
Goofs[]
- When it closes up to Kai-Lan after painting the Chinese symbols, the other two aside from the one behind her disappear.
