Plot[]

Kai-Lan and her animal friends are going to a new playhouse that Ye-Ye and the ants built for them. Everyone then decides to do art walls, where the five of them will decorate their wall. Kai-Lan paints a forest with mountains and then goes upstairs to get some dinosaur stickers. At first, she’s unable to reach the top of the mountains but gets some assistance from the ladybugs. Hoho wants to paint a banana on the wall, but unfortunately, he’s unable to find any yellow paint, so he ends up reluctantly selecting black. Hoho then chooses to get a banana tree picture, but unfortunately, it gets ruined by the black paint. Getting angrier, he looks for banana stickers, but unfortunately, he cannot find them. He then looks downstairs & sees that Rintoo already has the banana stickers. He starts to get really enraged as he heads downstairs. Hoho screams & laments about how he never got anything he wanted today. He then becomes so mad that he stomps over to Rintoo and hits him in his leg before stomping away. Meanwhile, the others check to see if Rintoo’s alright. However, nobody seems to understand why Hoho hit Rintoo in the first place.

Kai-Lan then spots Hoho stomping around nearby & notices how mad he is. She then believes that Hoho hit Rintoo due to the fact that he was feeling mad. But rather than Kai-Lan confronting Hoho herself, Ye-Ye steps in & tells Hoho that hitting hurts. Yeye says that while Hoho can be mad, he can't hit. He then takes Hoho by the hand to a stool in a corner for a timeout to calm down. Hoho tries to protest, but Ye-Ye tells him that when he is calm, they will talk about what he could have done instead of hitting. So, he begrudgingly sits on the stool. Kai-Lan & the rest of her friends are a little upset that Hoho can’t play with them at the moment, but they decide to give him some time alone regardless.

Ye-Ye then tells everyone else that it's snack time, Tolee wants a panda plate, but then looks at Lulu as she takes the panda plate first, stated that he wanted a panda plate and that she took it. Ye-Ye expressed that he did a very smart thing because used his words to explain to Lulu about how he feel, where he then pulls out another panda plate for Tolee. Kai-Lan finds an answer; "even when you're mad, hitting's always bad; use your words."

Ye-Ye then asks Hoho if he feels calm now. He does and apologizes to Rintoo after hitting him. Kai-Lan advises Hoho that if he’s mad, rather than hitting Rintoo, he should use his words to clarify why. Hoho chooses to give it a try, and states that he wasn't feeling mad at Rintoo, but rather that he was just mad over not being able to get the supplies he wanted; including not finding any yellow paint, the banana tree picture being ruined in the black paint, and there being no banana stickers left. Rintoo then understood how he felt and decides to share two of his banana stickers with Hoho, which makes him really happy. The others are proud of Hoho for using his words, and Hoho even feels proud of himself for doing so.

While everyone finishing their wall, Hoho decides to paint a purple banana instead, since he has trouble finding yellow paint. The ants then come in to reveal dinosaur rockers outside for everyone. The kids go out to play on them while the ants take a snack break. On the table, there’s several orange slices and one apple slice. One of the ants, Fufu, wants the apple slice, but Bubu starts to take it. Just as she is about to hit him, Hoho immediately steps in & tells Fufu not to hit. Instead, he explains that Fufu should use her words and tell Bubu why she’s mad, to which Kai-Lan agrees. Fufu then tells Bubu that she wanted the apple & the two decide to split it in half.

Afterwards, everyone goes inside the playhouse to see the walls. Hoho presents his purple banana, Lulu made a teapot out of pink balloons, Rintoo painted a jungle with a tiger just like him, Tolee painted a giraffe with a panda, & Kai-Lan made a painting of a forest with dinosaurs.

At the end of the day, everyone goes outside to play on the dinosaur rockers, while Kai-Lan talks with Ye-Ye. Ye-Ye says that Kai-Lan had been a great friend for helping Hoho understand to use his words.

Quotes[]

  • Hoho: Blue, purple, orange, black...; Hey! There’s no yellow paint here! (grunts) I want yellow paint...!, I'm mad!
  • Hoho: I want yellow paint, but there isn't any!

  • Hoho: There. That's just right. Oh, no! My banana picture's ruined! I'm mad!

  • Kai-Lan: Look at Hoho. He's making fists with his hands, and his face is all scrunched up.
  • Hoho: AHHH! I can't get anything I want today! First, there wasn't any yellow paint, then my picture got ruined & now there aren't any banana stickers left! I'm so mad! (grunts and hits Rintoo on his knee)
  • Rintoo: Ow! Hoho... you hit me!
  • Tolee: I can't believe Hoho hit Rintoo!

  • Ye Ye: Hoho, we never ever hit. Hitting hurts. You can be mad, but you can't hit. You need a time-out to calm down.
  • Hoho: A time-out?!
  • (Yeye directs him to a stool)
  • Ye Ye: Sit here, until I tell you to get up.
  • Hoho: But Ye Ye...
  • Ye Ye: When you're calm, we can talk about what you've could have done instead of hitting. (Hoho begrudgingly sits on the stool, sighs & he huffs grumpily)
  • Kai-Lan: Wow. Hoho has to calm down, because he hit Rintoo. So, he can't play with us right now.

Trivia[]

  • This is the only episode in the entire series where Hoho did something violent (i.e hitting). As a result, this episode was controversial due to it being too intense for younger children.
    • In fact, this episode can often be compared to ‘No Hitter’, an episode of another preschool show Dragon Tales. Coincidentally, both episodes have similar plot lines in which both involve the youngest character (Hoho here & Max in Dragon Tales) hitting their friend or friends after getting angry over not getting what they want (though Max hit both his sister Emmy & dragon pal Ord) , they are both given a timeout by the elder authority figures (Yeye here & Quetzal from Dragon Tales) & the episodes share the moral of using your words & not your fists.
  • This marks the very first episode of the series not to have "What Can We Try (It's Up to Me and You)", & where neither Kai-Lan nor her animal pals don't confront whoever caused the main problem, rather; it's Ye-Ye who does it.
  • This is also one of the few episodes in which Kai-Lan makes a mad face, which is towards the end when explaining the lesson song.
  • This marks the last time the song is in C# major.
  • When Tolee is collecting some pictures for his wall, the tune that he is humming is the song Friends Make Me Super Happy.

Remarks[]

  • Hoho could have put two pieces of tape on his banana picture, or even four, to prevent it from falling into the black paint, or he could have put the paint away to prevent the picture from getting ruined.
  • Kai-Lan was obviously concerned about Hoho when he was mad, but she couldn't really help him at all even after asking him what he wanted or if she could help him.

Goofs/Errors[]

  • After Rintoo slides down the pole into the ballpit, there is one frame where his tooth disappears.
  • When Kai-Lan pushes the lever down, it appears on the part of the wall next to her section. However, in the following shot where the supplies come up upstairs, the lever is disconnected to the wall, appearing to float in midair.
    • Also, there are several shots where the lever isn’t on the wall at all.
  • When Hoho throws his banana picture after it gets ruined, his nose is missing for a single frame.
  • After Rintoo gives Hoho two of his banana stickers, they are not on Hoho's wall or still on Rintoo's wall for several scenes.
